Heat Pump Grants – A Quick Guide for UK Homeowners

Updated 29th April 2026.

Here are the key facts and things you need to know about heat pump grants currently available to UK homeowners, based on the most recent announcements by government.

What is the heat pump grant called?

It’s called the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or BUS, and it’s been running a little while now. The government recommitted to the scheme in their Warm Homes Plan in early 2026. It also reaffirmed the commitment in terms of the time it will be available, broadened the technologies covered and (most recently) increased the amounts available.

Who is eligible?

This is quite simple (all of these need to apply):

  • Homeowners in England and Wales – so NOT renters or those in social housing, or indeed those in Scotland or Northern Ireland (other schemes operate there).
  • Those replacing a fossil fuelled heating system, or one that uses direct electricity, with a heat pump (or other eligible technology, see below). If you use, LPG, gas, or electric radiators (like storage heaters) and are getting completely rid, that’s what counts.
  • You’re using Microgeneration CertificationScheme (MCS) certified installers and equipment.

Note too that the heat pump will need to be sized to meet your home’s entirespace heating demand.

What technologies are eligible?

Again, straightforward. As of the 28th April 2026:

  • Air source heat pumps, a.k.a. air-to-water heat pumps
  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Exhaust air heat pumps
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Biomass boilers (although this is a guide to heat pump grants, so maybe ignore this one)

How do I apply?

You don’t. Your MCS certified installer will do this on your behalf, making the application to OFGEM for your grant voucher. They’ll do this after your survey, once the system is designed and specified, and you’ve agreed to go ahead with the work.

OFGEM will get in touch with you to confirm some details and make sure there’s no fraudulent shenanigans going on, and then once work is completed will pay the installer the monies directly.

How much can I get?

It depends on the technology, as follows:

  • Air source heat pumps - £7,500, rising to £9,000 for LPG/oil heated properties from July 2026
  • Ground source heat pumps – as above
  • Exhaust air heat pumps - £2,500
  • Air to air heat pumps - £2,500
  • Biomass boilers - £5,000

What else should I be aware of with regard the grant?

Well, good question that. The requirement to have a valid EPC no longer applies, and there is no requirement either to have loft or cavity wall insulation installed before installation. On this latter point, we’d still recommend it as it will reduce the size of the heat pumpyou need, and therefore the amount you’ll spend.

It’s still important to get either multiple quotes (although not a grant requirement) or verified pricing from a single installer, to know you’re getting good value. Thermly provides both routes, depending on where you live, making the process a LOT more straightforward.

There is no confirmed date for the uplift to £9,000 for oil and LPG properties yet, other than around ‘July 2026’ – but we’ll update here when we know more.

Is the heat pump grant worth it?

Absolutely. If you’re eligible, why wouldn’t you? With the typical cost of an air source heat pump in the £12-14k range, most people will halve the cost of their installation, and then some.
